Nikki Collis suffered from kidney failing requiring her to be on dialysis three times a week for 5 hours each session.
Prior to going on the transplant wait list, doctors require patents to go through extensive tests and checks to ensure that their bodies are ready to take on a transplant and to minimise the chance of infection spreading to the new organ. Nikki needed extensive dental work done before she was able to go on the waiting list. With the SLDO Assist grant, Nikki was able to get that work done and finally have her name added to the list.
The funds raised for Nikki’s SLDO Assist grant came from a charity walk organised by Annie Wells. Annie’s mom passed away suddenly and, without the family knowing, she had registered as an organ donor. Realising that her mother gave one last gift to four different people inspired Annie to raise money in her mom’s honour and donate this money to a charity that supports organ donation. SLDO was lucky enough to be chosen by Annie to be the recipient. As a thank you, we brought Annie up from Sydney to meet Nikki and give her the SLDO Assist grant on our behalf. Thank you Annie and friends for your generous donation.
UPDATE: Nikki has successfully received a kidney transplant and is doing very well.
